EU Delegation Commemorates One Year Since Detention of Georgian Journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, Renewing Calls for Her Release
January 13, 2026January 13, 2026 – Sudan –
A coalition of press freedom and human rights organisations has called on Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately release Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim, who has been held since October 26, 2025, after being detained in El Fasher, North Darfur, while attempting to leave the city amid hostilities.
In joint statements, the organizations say Ibrahim’s detention has been marked by an alarming lack of verified information about his health, legal status, and conditions of confinement, noting he has largely been held incommunicado without access to family or legal counsel. They argue that this secrecy places him at heightened risk and violates basic safeguards for detainees.
The groups point to videos circulated on social media on the day of his detention, showing Ibrahim in the presence of RSF fighters, confirming he had been detained. A later video, they say, shows him being questioned and stating he was transferred to Nyala, South Darfur, which they describe as among the only publicly available indicators of his whereabouts.
CPJ said it was joined by more than 80 organisations and journalists in urging the RSF to release Ibrahim and ensure his protection. The statements emphasize that journalists are civilians under international humanitarian law and that parties holding detainees must ensure humane treatment, including protection from harm and access to medical care.
Advocacy groups are also urging all parties to Sudan’s conflict to refrain from actions that endanger journalists and media workers, warning that attacks and arbitrary detention further restrict independent reporting during a period of severe civilian harm and displacement.
