Two major journalist organizations in Delhi — the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) and the Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC) — were shaken when they received threatening emails claiming there were bombs planted at their offices. The alerts, which arrived in the morning hours of [date], triggered immediate security alerts, police intervention, and an atmosphere of fear among members.
According to media reports, both DUJ and IWPC received near-identical emails warning of explosive devices inside their premises. Staff at both locations immediately notified authorities. The Delhi Police responded by dispatching bomb-squad units and evacuating the buildings, while also inspecting and scanning for potential threats.
After thorough checks, the police declared the threats to be hoaxes — no explosive devices were found and no suspicious activity was detected. Despite this, the scare left many journalists and staff shaken, disrupting office activity and raising questions about the motive behind the hoax.
The two press bodies expressed outrage at what they called a deliberate attempt to intimidate and silence independent media. Leaders from DUJ and IWPC condemned the threats, labeling them unacceptable and urging authorities to find and punish whoever was behind the hoax. Several media-freedom advocates highlighted the incident as part of a broader pattern of harassment aimed at journalists, warning that such intimidation undermines press freedom and has chilling effects on reporting.
The Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the origin of the emails, including digital forensics and attempts to trace the IP addresses from which the threats were sent. Families of journalists and activists are watching closely, worried that the hoax may signal more serious threats to come.
While the bomb warnings proved false, the attack on trust, safety, and freedom of expression has lingered. For many in the capital’s media community, the incident is not just about a hoax — it’s about realizing that in an increasingly polarized environment, threats to the press must be taken seriously — even if they seem to be empty.
