India’s national human-rights watchdog, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has taken suo motu cognizance of media-reported assaults on journalists in three states — Kerala, Manipur, and Tripura. The incidents occurred on 30 August 2025 in Kerala and Manipur and on 21 September 2025 in Tripura. In each case, the journalist victims were hospitalized, and FIRs were filed.
In Tripura, a journalist attending a clothes-distribution event organized by a political party in Hezamara, West Tripura, was attacked by a group wielding sticks and sharp weapons and had his motorcycle stolen. In Manipur, another reporter covering a flower festival in Laii Village, Senapati district, was shot twice with an air gun. Meanwhile, in Kerala, a journalist returning from a wedding in Mangattukavala, Thodupuzha, was assaulted by a group of individuals.
The NHRC has issued formal notices to the Directors General of Police (DGPs) of the three states and has demanded detailed reports within two weeks, covering the facts of the attacks, steps taken, and preventive measures. The Commission emphasized the vital role of journalists in preserving democracy and transparency, and underscored that their safety must be ensured without fear or obstruction.
This action by the NHRC underscores increasing concern in India about the safety of media personnel, especially in politically charged or conflict-sensitive regions. The assaults on journalists in Kerala, Manipur, and Tripura are symptomatic of broader risks to press freedom and reflect the urgent need for robust protection frameworks. The fact that these cases prompted the NHRC’s own initiative highlights both the seriousness of the incidents and the adequacy of institutional response.
