During a recent White House roundtable on protests, President Donald Trump publicly rebuked Kristen Holmes, a CNN senior White House correspondent. He declined to take her question about a proposed Israel–Hamas peace plan.
When Holmes asked whether Trump was personally involved in brokering the deal, the president interrupted her: “This is CNN speaking, by the way … one of the worst reporters that you’ll ever see.” He added that he didn’t “even want to take her question,” calling it “a waste of time.”
The exchange came just after Secretary of State Marco Rubio discreetly passed Trump a note regarding the potential cease-fire agreement. In response, Trump continued with the press session, bypassing Holmes and addressing other reporters.
Trump later took to Truth Social, asserting Hamas and Israel had accepted the first phase of his 20-point peace plan. He told Fox News host Sean Hannity that hostages would “probably” be released by Monday and said the plan could lead to a temporary halt in fighting. According to White House sources, part of the plan involves Israeli forces withdrawing from segments of Gaza, contingent on approval by the Israeli cabinet.
The incident drew swift criticism from journalistic circles, with some viewing the president’s behaviour as an attack on media freedom. Others saw it as consistent with a well-established pattern of hostility by Trump toward news outlets he perceives as adversarial.
In the wake of the confrontation, observers noted that the tension between the presidency and the press remains sharp, particularly when media scrutiny intersects with sensitive foreign policy issues.
