Members of the Global Sumud Flotilla—a humanitarian mission intending to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza—say they were subjected to harsh and degrading treatment during their detention by Israeli authorities.
Among the complaints: detainees claim they were beaten, mocked, deprived of sleep and medications, forced to lie on floors, and threatened with weapons and dogs. Italian journalist Saverio Tommasi described attacks on his head and back, stating guards laughed as they assaulted those who dared to make eye contact.
Greta Thunberg, one of the flotilla participants, was allegedly singled out for humiliating treatment. Some accounts say she was forced to pose with Israeli flags, had her cell infested with bedbugs, and was denied clean water and adequate food.
Yet Israel’s response is firm: the government dismissed all accusations as “brazen lies,” insisting that detainees’ rights were respected. The National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, defended the conduct in prison, saying the detainees should “get a feel” for conditions at Ketziot prison.
Despite deporting over 300 activists—including nationals from Australia, Greece, and Spain—many remain in custody under deteriorating conditions. Some detainees say they were denied legal representation, subjected to degrading searches, and kept in overcrowded cells.
The flotilla interception and subsequent allegations have drawn international scrutiny, with governments and human rights organizations demanding independent investigations and accountability for any abuses.
