A Palestinian journalist, Inas Azmi Ramadan, has been killed in Gaza City after an Israeli airstrike struck the Al-Nasr neighborhood, according to local media reports. The journalist’s death was confirmed by the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center, which said she was 41 years old and died “while performing her duties, or among civilians,” decrying the act as part of a disturbing pattern of targeting media personnel.
Ramadan’s death raises the toll of journalists killed in Gaza to alarming levels. In response, a UN expert reiterated that in the current conflict, no place in Gaza can be considered safe — including areas supposedly designated “humanitarian zones” — warning that unrestrained attacks are putting civilians and media workers alike in grave danger.
The UN’s statement comes amid mounting evidence that the press in Gaza is under siege. Foreign correspondents continue to be denied entry, leaving local journalists to bear the brunt of covering the war under extreme peril. Media observers argue that attacks such as Ramadan’s death deepen the silence that envelops conflict zones and stifle independent documentation of events on the ground.
The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center condemned the strike in strong terms, describing Ramadan’s killing as a “horrifying crime” against both citizens and reporters, and urging accountability for those responsible.
This incident adds to the broader crisis of press safety in Gaza. In recent months, multiple journalists have been killed or injured in airstrikes and shelling, including in reportedly press-marked areas. (For example, several journalists died in a strike near Nasser Hospital.)
In sum, the killing of Inas Ramadan underscores the dangerous terrain journalists navigate in Gaza today — where conflict and bombardment spare few, and even those dedicated to bearing witness are not shielded from the broader assault.
