A group of international journalists was escorted by the Israeli army through parts of Gaza City, in what officials described as a controlled media tour intended to show the impact of the two-year conflict.
The carefully choreographed visit passed through the Netzarim corridor and near a Jordanian-run hospital, revealing a landscape of widespread destruction: bombed buildings, empty streets, and tortured infrastructure. One area visited was a hospital no longer in full operation, which Israeli forces claimed to have found a tunnel beneath—a claim denied by Jordanian authorities.
The tour comes as Israel intensifies its campaign in Gaza City, widening its ground invasion and issuing evacuation orders to the remaining civilian population. Earlier, Gaza City had already endured severe strikes, including assaults on high-rise buildings that Israel claimed were being used for Hamas operations.
During the escorted visit, journalists were given limited access and were monitored at every turn—something that critics say undermines independent reporting. Israel has historically restricted unsupervised media entry into Gaza, citing security concerns.
Healthcare in Gaza is collapsing: of 36 hospitals in the city, 22 are shut down, and the rest operate only partially, according to WHO data referenced during the tour. The humanitarian crisis is severe, with mass displacement and dwindling access to essentials.
Israel frames its offensive as an effort to dismantle Hamas’s militant footprint, especially where it alleges militant infrastructure is hidden within civilian zones. But the heavy toll on civilian life and infrastructure has drawn international criticism, especially for how the media narrative is shaped during such guided tours.
This mediated access raises a critical question: in a warzone where truth is contested, how far can such controlled exposure serve as transparent journalism? In Gaza’s unfolding crisis, the line between access and censorship continues to blur.
