Black Journalists Face Erasure as Newsrooms Remain Overwhelmingly White
October 2, 2025October 02, 2025 – Palestine –
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has issued a stark warning against any assault by Israeli forces on journalists aboard a flotilla headed toward Gaza, raising alarm over potential violations of press freedom and international norms.
The flotilla—often called the Global Resilience/Steadfastness Fleet—carries dozens of journalists and media professionals from around the world, who intend to document the humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The Syndicate called on UNESCO and the United Nations to intervene swiftly, providing protection to media workers and ensuring their safety.
According to the statement, any storming, harassment, or use of force against the vessels or their occupants would represent a grave breach of international law, human rights, and press freedoms. It framed such an act as not merely a violation but a war crime, underlining that it would be a direct attack on freedom of expression and the role of the media as witnesses in conflict zones.
The Syndicate said it is monitoring developments around the clock and urged journalistic bodies, human rights groups, and media outlets to follow and publicize any aggressive moves against the fleet.
In parallel, a related statement from the Palestinian Foreign Ministry characterized Israel’s interception of the “Freedom Fleet” as an act of maritime piracy, accusing it of disabling communications, boarding vessels, and detaining activists and journalists.
Overall, these warnings reflect deep concern that journalists—who play a critical role in exposing suffering and documenting human rights abuses—could become targets themselves in the contest over control, narrative, and visibility of the Gaza crisis.
