The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), together with the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) network, has publicly condemned recent actions by German police that hindered journalists covering pro-Palestinian protests—and urged stronger protections for press freedom.
According to the joint statement, since early September 2025, MapMF (Mapping Media Freedom) has registered at least two incidents in Berlin in which journalists were obstructed while reporting on the demonstrations slated under the “All Together for Gaza” banner.
In one case, on September 3, Italian photojournalist Zaira Biagini was stopped by police while covering a demonstration at Alexanderplatz. Even though she had her press credentials clearly displayed, she was escorted away by officers who demanded that she hand over her photos for review—an order she refused. The police claim that their check was intended to ensure no images of officers were captured, but they provided no legal basis on the spot.
Minutes later, another journalist, Ryad Aref, was approached despite presenting his press identification. He was also escorted by officers and told, “You may film anywhere in Germany, just not in Berlin.” No further explanation was given at the time; Aref was later informed he’d be notified by post. Berlin police have stated publicly that they are “not aware” of the incident and gave no additional comment.
ECPMF and MFRR argue that such measures—restricting reporting, confiscating equipment, or making arbitrary demands—constitute unlawful interference with the journalistic role. They note that any such limitations must be judicially sanctioned under clearly defined legal provisions, not imposed ad hoc by police.
The organizations also point to a broader pattern: their monitoring has documented 28 cases of police interference involving 72 media workers across various protests in Germany during 2024 and 2025, of which 11 incidents affected journalists covering pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The joint appeal calls on German authorities to uphold the freedom of the press, especially in contentious environments, and to prevent police from acting as gatekeepers or intimidators toward journalists. They also encourage reporters to document such violations and urge watchdogs to track them impartially.
