A journalist in Peru, Dennis Muñoz, has been subject to intimidation after bullets were left at both his workplace and his home, according to LatAm Journalism Review, citing Pachamama Radio.
The incident took place in the early morning hours: one bullet was found at the main entrance of the radio station Radio Universal in Ayaviri, and two bullets were placed at Muñoz’s house. The placements appear calculated to provoke fear.
Muñoz is director of the news program Chekaq Willakuykuna – Rijchariy Melgarino. In recent weeks, he has reported on alleged criminal activity in the area, including questions about the role of the Peruvian National Police in a case involving two suspects released despite surveillance camera evidence of a robbery. His reporting appears to have drawn the ire of those who may see their actions under scrutiny.
Media management at Radio Universal condemned the act, describing it as a direct “threat” against Muñoz intended to deter further investigative work.
This case highlights the increasing danger faced by local journalists operating in smaller cities or rural areas, where institutional protections are thin and reprisals more covert. Threats, harassment, or staged warnings such as leaving bullets are tactics that signal activists and press freedom groups condemn.
Calls are expected from journalist protection networks, press freedom organizations, and civil society to demand an investigation, ensure Muñoz’s safety, and reaffirm that such intimidation tactics are unacceptable in any democratic setting.
