Senior journalist and TV anchor Imtiaz Mir, known for hosting the current affairs show “Aaj Ki Baat with Imtiaz Mir” on Metro 1 News, was critically injured in a targeted attack in Karachi’s Malir district late on Sunday. The incident took place in the Kala Board area when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Mir’s car, which was being driven by his brother. One bullet reportedly struck his mouth; he also sustained wounds to his chest. He was rushed to a private hospital and is said to be in stable condition after being taken off ventilation.
Karachi police, including SSP Qur’angi Tariq Nawaz, confirmed that the attack appears deliberate rather than random — not related to robbery or petty crime. The suspects, described in media reports as a man and a woman, fled the scene immediately. Two bullet casings were recovered by investigators.
Government officials responded swiftly. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah condemned the “murderous attack,” ordering authorities — including the Inspector General of Police — to produce a full report. Sindh Home Minister Zia ul Hasan Lanjar also demanded an immediate arrest of the perpetrators and emphasized that protecting journalists is a top priority.
Observers noted that this is neither a first for Karachi nor for Pakistan. Journalists in Sindh province have frequently faced threats, harassment, and violence over their work. A recent report by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative found that between 2006 and 2023 in Pakistan, 87 journalists were killed, but only two of those cases were formally resolved.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with the collection of CCTV footage, forensic examination, and questioning of witnesses among the steps being taken. Mir’s own account is expected to provide insight into the motive behind the attack.
