The Acting Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, paid a condolence visit to the family of slain journalist Ojo Peter in Ibadan, promising government support and solidarity during their time of grief. The visit followed widespread outrage over Peter’s death, which reportedly occurred after he was attacked by suspected armed robbers. Lawal described the tragedy as a painful loss, noting that Peter was a promising professional who died “at his prime.”
At the family’s residence in Apata, the acting governor expressed heartfelt sympathy to Peter’s wife, children, and relatives. He emphasized that the state government would not abandon them and assured that measures would be taken to provide meaningful assistance. Lawal added that while no support could replace the life lost, the government had a duty to stand by the families of citizens who serve society through their professions. He prayed for the family’s comfort and resilience, saying he would personally ensure further support is arranged.
The visit was attended by key officials, including the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Professor Dahud Shangodoyin. Leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo State also joined, reinforcing the strong ties between the journalism community and the state government. Their presence underscored the collective recognition of Peter’s contributions and the gravity of the loss.
Lawal urged journalists across Oyo State to rally around the bereaved family, stressing that solidarity and compassion would help them endure this painful chapter. He described the media as a cornerstone of democracy and acknowledged the risks journalists face in carrying out their duties. His message highlighted the state’s commitment not only to Peter’s family but also to safeguarding press freedom and protecting those who inform the public.
The death of Ojo Peter has sparked conversations about journalist safety in Nigeria, where reporters continue to face threats ranging from violence to intimidation. Lawal’s outreach represents an effort to honor Peter’s memory while assuring the media community that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. The promise of support reflects a broader call for accountability and security for journalists nationwide.
