In a daring and life-preserving act, Machis, a 25-pound cocker spaniel mix in Huaral, Peru, thwarted a potentially fatal dynamite explosion at the home of local journalist Carlos Alberto Mesías Zárate. According to security camera footage, an assailant threw a lit stick of dynamite through a broken window above the front door of the residence. Machis immediately rushed to the explosive, barking and racing down the stairs, then instinctively bit into the burning fuse and chewed it until it extinguished—effectively deactivating the device and preventing catastrophe.
The explosive, authorities later confirmed, was similar to those used in landmines. The swift and courageous intervention by Machis spared the journalist’s family from serious harm. In disbelief, Zárate reflected, “She chewed it and chewed it and saved our lives.”
Despite her heroic act, Machis suffered a serious consequence: damage to her vocal cords, leaving her unable to bark as before. Nonetheless, she remains energetic and active, winning admiration from her local community and becoming a celebrated figure in Huaral.
Following the incident, Zárate promptly alerted law enforcement. A specialized bomb disposal unit was dispatched to safely remove the explosive, and a suspect has since been arrested. Authorities continue to treat the attack as an act of intimidation in response to Zárate’s journalistic work. The family has requested police protection in light of the incident.
This extraordinary case underscores the unexpected valor pets can display. Machis’s quick thinking and fearless instinct not only saved her family from a violent threat but also highlighted the profound bond between humans and canine companions—even when the actions defy logic at first glance.
