Israeli media outlets, which for nearly two years predominantly covered Israeli loss and heroism following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, have gradually begun to report on the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Until recently, the suffering of Palestinian civilians—including malnourished children and widespread destruction—was largely absent from mainstream broadcasts. This shift comes amid mounting global outrage and internal debates about the continuation of the military offensive.
Prominent Israeli anchor Raviv Drucker acknowledged that coverage had skewed heavily toward Israeli perspectives, noting, “During most of the war, the Israeli media really reported very little on the suffering in Gaza or the hunger or destruction,” and where reporting existed, it tended to frame the narrative around how Israel’s actions impacted the campaign against Hamas. The long-standing omission reflected deeper societal trauma and political polarization, drawing attention to Palestinian hardship posed challenges amid national narratives of defense.
In recent weeks, however, segments dedicated to capturing the humanitarian fallout in Gaza have begun to appear. Disturbing visuals—such as starving children—broke through media filters, prompting urgent coverage of starvation and aid shortages. But this shift proved fragile: editorial focus soon veered back to hostages, military developments, and political messaging, influenced by continuous inflows of hostage-related material and nationalist priorities.
This evolving media posture reflects both the limitations and potential of journalism under conflict. Press freedom advocates emphasize that providing fuller narratives—especially in times of war—is essential to public understanding and moral clarity. As debates unfold within Israeli society, the question remains whether the media will sustain a commitment to honest, inclusive storytelling or retreat into familiar and narrower frames.
