Photojournalist Pablo Grillo, who suffered life-threatening head trauma after being struck by a tear gas canister fired by military police during a pensioners’ protest against President Javier Milei’s government in Argentina in March, has undergone his eighth surgery amid a plateau in neurological recovery. Despite hopes raised by an August 13 procedure implanting skull prosthetics, his family announced on August 27 that Grillo was “not recovering as expected” and urgently required another surgical intervention to address critically low cerebrospinal fluid levels.
Following the operation earlier this week, Pablo’s father, Fabián Grillo, indicated that the procedure was successful and that doctors would assess his condition via tomography in the coming days. “Neurologically, he is in a plateau,” the family posted on their X account JusticiaPorPabloGrillo, and noted that before the surgery, Pablo was increasingly lethargic, responding mostly with gestures rather than speech.
Despite spending nearly three months in intensive care following the March 12 injury, Grillo was briefly discharged in June to continue rehabilitation. However, recent complications forced his return to the ICU. As of August 27, hospital staff reported his condition as clinically stable, though his neurological progress remains stagnant.
Grillo’s case has drawn widespread attention in Argentina, highlighting concerns about excessive use of force against journalists. Human rights groups and press associations nationwide condemned the incident. Video footage captured by fellow journalists was instrumental in identifying the gendarme responsible, who is now facing judicial questioning for protocol violations.
The ongoing medical emergency places Grillo in a precarious situation. His family continues to call for justice, while press freedom advocates urge a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the injury and protection for media professionals covering public demonstrations.
