In a recent interview with Habilian, Italian journalist and Marx21 editor Marco Pondrelli argued that Israel employs terrorism as a deliberate strategic tool in its regional agenda. He claimed that Israeli military actions in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran are not isolated incidents but part of a broader policy aimed at weakening resistance movements and asserting dominance in the Middle East.
Pondrelli stated that Israel targets civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and media outlets to destabilise societies and erode morale. He dismissed Israeli justifications that these operations are focused on neutralising military or nuclear threats, asserting instead that the goal is to instil fear, force displacement, and suppress opposition. He linked these strategies to what he described as efforts to ethnically cleanse Palestinians and expand territorial control.
According to Pondrelli, Western powers, including the United States and European Union, enable these actions through military aid, political support, and biased media coverage. He suggested that Western governments lack independence and are heavily influenced by pro-Israel lobbying groups. He cited the presence of over 130 US military bases in Italy as evidence of compromised sovereignty.
He also criticised the portrayal of Israel in Western media, arguing that narratives often ignore the suffering of civilians and the broader geopolitical motivations behind Israeli military operations. Pondrelli claimed that critics of Israel are often silenced or discredited by being labelled as antisemitic or sympathetic to terrorism.
The journalist further accused Israel of pursuing long-term goals that involve eliminating Palestinian identity and creating a regional alliance with Saudi Arabia to expand economic and strategic influence. He linked these ambitions to broader Western projects such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which he claimed marginalises Palestinian and Iranian interests.
Pondrelli concluded by calling for international resistance through both public protest and political action. He emphasised the importance of supporting a multipolar world order in which nations like Iran and Palestine can assert their sovereignty without foreign intervention. He warned that continued Western support for Israeli policies would contribute to further instability and human suffering in the region.
