Trump, Leaks, and Threats: The Iran Intelligence Clash

Salomón “Shalom” Ordóñez Miranda, a 40-year-old Mexican journalist and photographer, was fatally shot on June 23, 2025, at around 8 p.m. in the town of Papahtapan in Cuetzalan del Progreso, Puebla. He succumbed to at least two gunshot wounds at a nearby hospital, marking him as the seventh journalist killed in Mexico this year.
Ordóñez Miranda founded and ran Shalom Cuetzalan Producciones, a Facebook-based local news outlet boasting around 75,000 followers, outnumbering the town’s estimated 50,000 residents. He primarily covered cultural events and local communal life without delving into corruption, politics, or organized crime. A local journalist, speaking anonymously to CPJ, confirmed his focus on benign community coverage.
Despite his non-sensitive reporting beat, unidentified assailants on motorcycles found and shot him. The Puebla prosecutor’s office (FGE) launched an investigation following a statement from the state government, but had made no arrests by the time of reporting.
Reactions have been swift and serious. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the murder, urging Mexican authorities to act swiftly and transparently to combat the enduring cycle of violence and impunity that plagues journalism under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. PEN International emphasized his commitment to reporting for his community, stating: “Salomón was killed for communicating from and for his people, with clarity, critique, and commitment”.
This tragedy highlights a stark reality: Mexico remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists, with over 100 media workers killed or disappeared since 2000, and most of their cases unresolved. Even locally focused journalists like Ordóñez Miranda are not immune.
His death underscores the peril faced by community journalists and the urgent need for more effective protection measures. Authorities must identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. For press freedom advocates, this case is yet another call to intensify international pressure and press for structural reforms to safeguard journalists working, even on seemingly innocuous beats.
