Journalist Javier Hércules Killed in Honduras Despite State Protection
June 2, 2025June 02, 2025 – Honduras –
Carlos Gilberto Aguirre, a beloved sports commentator and radio host in Honduras, was found murdered on June 1, 2025, in Juticalpa, Olancho. His death has shocked the local community and drawn widespread condemnation from journalists and human rights organizations.
Aguirre, who worked for Radio Oro Estéreo, was initially believed to have been struck by a vehicle after his body was discovered on a road. However, an autopsy later revealed that he had suffered multiple stab wounds, confirming that he was murdered. Authorities have since launched a criminal investigation, but no arrests have been made as of yet.
Known affectionately as “Carlitos,” Aguirre had a long-standing reputation in the region as a passionate sports analyst and a respected former soccer player. His broadcasts on local games and sports commentary were a staple for listeners across Juticalpa and beyond. Friends and colleagues described him as a cheerful and dedicated professional who was deeply involved in his community.
Aguirre’s death marks yet another violent attack against media workers in Honduras, a country frequently ranked among the most dangerous in the region for journalists. The Association for a More Just Society (ASJ) strongly condemned his killing, calling it an attack on freedom of expression and the public’s right to information. The organization urged authorities to conduct a swift and transparent investigation and to address the growing insecurity faced by journalists.
The murder occurred on the same day as the killing of another journalist, Javier Antonio Hércules, in a separate part of the country. The two deaths have reignited fears about the worsening climate for journalists in Honduras, particularly in the lead-up to the 2025 elections.
As tributes pour in for Aguirre, press freedom advocates continue to call for justice and for urgent reforms to ensure the safety of journalists who risk their lives to inform the public. For many in Juticalpa, the voice of local sports has been tragically silenced.
