The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that journalist Samy Kambere Malikidogo was shot by a police officer while covering a public demonstration against crime and violence in Durba, a town in the northeastern province of Haut-Uélé, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The incident occurred as Malikidogo was documenting the protest, highlighting the risks faced by journalists in the region.
CPJ has called on DRC authorities to swiftly, thoroughly, and transparently investigate the shooting and hold the responsible officer accountable. Angela Quintal, CPJ’s Africa program coordinator, emphasized the importance of protecting journalists, stating, “DRC authorities must swiftly, thoroughly, and transparently investigate journalist Samy Kambere Malikidogo’s shooting and hold the officer responsible to account.”
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence and intimidation against journalists in the DRC. In recent years, journalists have faced arrests, assaults, and even killings while reporting on protests and conflicts. For instance, in February 2024, journalist Lucien Lyenda was attacked by armed forces while covering a protest in Tanganyika province. Such incidents highlight the perilous environment in which Congolese journalists work.
The CPJ continues to advocate for press freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide. They urge the DRC government to uphold its commitments to human rights and ensure that journalists can work without fear of violence or reprisal. The organization also calls for concrete measures to protect journalists and combat impunity in the country.
As the DRC faces ongoing security challenges, the role of journalists in reporting on these issues is more critical than ever. Ensuring their safety is essential for transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights in the region.
