Beijing Targets U.S.-Based Journalist’s Circle in Global Crackdown on Dissent
May 27, 2025May 27, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
On May 27, 2025, Israeli forces injured two Palestinian children and two journalists during military operations in the occupied West Bank, specifically in the cities of Qalqilia, Jenin, and Bethlehem.
In Qalqilia, soldiers fired rubber-coated steel bullets during a morning raid, injuring a child in the leg. The child was transported to Darwish Nazzal Government Hospital for treatment. Additionally, Israeli forces stormed the Qalqilia Municipality building and nearby commercial shops, detaining several individuals, including Louay Fathi Al-Ashqar, Alaa Ayad Daoud, Muhammad Yasser Amer, and Anhar Muhammad Abdul Jawad.
In Jenin, a 12-year-old child was shot in the chest with a rubber-coated steel bullet during an afternoon incursion. The child was hospitalized, and two young men were arrested during raids on local exchange shops. Israeli forces deployed snipers on rooftops, fired tear gas canisters, and conducted operations in various parts of the city, including the Cinema Roundabout and Abu Bakr Street.
In Bethlehem, journalists covering the military incursion were targeted by Israeli forces. Hani Fanoun, director of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation’s Bethlehem office, and photographer Fares Janazra suffered from tear gas inhalation after soldiers fired rubber-coated bullets, tear gas canisters, and concussion grenades at the press crew.
These incidents are part of a broader pattern of violence in the West Bank. Between April 29 and May 5, 2025, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians and injured at least 57 others, including six children, across the region. Over 90% of the 122 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank from January 1 to May 5 were in the six northern governorates, including Jenin.
The targeting of journalists and children has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations, highlighting concerns over press freedom and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
