Tommy Robinson Charged with Harassing Journalists Amid Early Prison Release
May 21, 2025May 20, 2025 – Sudan –
On May 18, 2025, Sudanese freelance photojournalist Al-Shykh Al-Samany Saadaldyn Mousa Abdulla, known professionally as “Sheikho,” was killed in a drone strike while covering a pro-Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) event organized by the Sudan Shield Forces in the Al-Butna area of central eastern Sudan. The attack, suspected to have been carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), also resulted in the deaths of at least seven SAF soldiers and injuries to 14 others.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and the protection of journalists operating in conflict zones. Since the outbreak of war between the SAF and RSF in April 2023, at least 12 journalists and media workers have lost their lives in Sudan, highlighting the escalating dangers faced by members of the press in the region.
The ongoing conflict has seen a significant increase in drone warfare, with the RSF launching multiple strikes across the country. Notably, in early May 2025, a series of drone attacks targeted Port Sudan, hitting critical infrastructure such as the airport, fuel depots, and military bases, leading to widespread destruction and power outages.
Sheikho’s death underscores the perilous conditions under which journalists operate in Sudan. His commitment to documenting the realities of war serves as a stark reminder of the essential role that journalists play in conflict zones and the urgent need for measures to ensure their safety.
