A tragic incident in Rajshahi has left a woman dead and her journalist husband seriously injured, prompting a police investigation and community concern. On Sunday, authorities recovered the body of Shathi Akter (30) from her flat in the Shah Makhdum Mohalla area after neighbours alerted law enforcement to unusual concerns at the residence. Her husband, Shakhawat Hossain (35), a local journalist, was found injured and taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement officials, responding around noon, discovered Shathi lying motionless with apparent wounds inside the couple’s flat. Police said initial findings indicated she may have died from injuries consistent with an attack, though a formal cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination ordered by the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Detective Branch. Investigators also noted signs of a struggle at the scene.
Shakhawat, who works with a regional news outlet, was discovered in a critical condition with multiple injuries. He was transported to the hospital immediately, where physicians reported he was receiving treatment and his condition was being closely monitored. Police said Hossain was initially unable to provide a full statement due to his condition, and detectives were awaiting his recovery to gather more information.
Local police officials confirmed that Shathi’s body had been sent to the Rajshahi Medical College Morgue for an autopsy, which will help determine the precise circumstances of her death. Investigators were at the scene collecting evidence and questioning neighbours and acquaintances. A senior RMP officer said the case was being investigated as a suspicious death, with law enforcement pursuing multiple leads.
Residents of the area expressed shock at the incident and said they heard commotion from the flat earlier in the day, but were unclear about what had occurred. The couple had been living in the neighbourhood for several years, and neighbours described them as quiet and private. Community members said police were working to establish a timeline of events.
No arrests have been announced, and police said they would share findings once more evidence had been processed. As investigations continue, authorities urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in resolving the case.
