2024: A Record Year for Journalist Fatalities, with Israel Implicated in Majority

Guinean investigative journalist Habib Marouane Camara was violently abducted in Conakry by men wearing gendarme uniforms. Camara, founder of the news website Lerevelateur224.com, was en route to a meeting with businessman Kerfalla Camara when his vehicle was intercepted at Carrefour KPC. Witnesses reported that the assailants smashed his car’s windshield, assaulted him, and forcibly took him to an unknown location.
Despite immediate efforts by his family and legal representatives to locate him, Camara’s whereabouts remain unknown months later. His wife, Mariama Lamarana Diallo, and lawyer, Salif Béavogui, filed a report with the Dixinn court of first instance the following day. Béavogui condemned the abduction as illegal, emphasizing that no arrest warrant or summons was presented, and highlighted prior threats against Camara.
The Guinean Union of Media Professionals (SPPG) has actively sought information on Camara’s fate, engaging with Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah and other officials, who promised investigations. However, no official updates have been provided. International organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have called on Guinean authorities to ensure Camara’s safety and uphold press freedom.
Camara’s disappearance underscores growing concerns about media repression in Guinea under the military regime that seized power in 2021. The junta has been criticized for dissolving political parties, suppressing dissent, and targeting journalists. The lack of transparency and accountability in Camara’s case exemplifies the broader challenges facing press freedom in the country.
As of June 2025, the fate of Habib Marouane Camara remains unknown, and advocates continue to demand his immediate release and the protection of journalists in Guinea.
