On the night of July 12, 2025, journalist C.H. Naresh was brutally murdered in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, highlighting once again the dangerous conditions faced by journalists working in remote and vulnerable regions of India. The attack took place near Muraliguda village in the Motu area, where Naresh, a local web journalist, was reportedly speaking with two fellow journalists and two other youths when a group of five assailants arrived on motorcycles and launched a violent assault.
Armed with swords and sharp weapons, the attackers targeted Naresh directly, inflicting deep injuries before fleeing the scene. Eyewitnesses and companions present during the attack rushed him to the nearby Motu Hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Malkangiri. Despite efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after.
The motive behind the killing remains unconfirmed, but the nature of the attack has raised suspicions that it may be connected to his work as a journalist. Naresh was known locally for reporting on sensitive issues in the region, including crime and social issues, though authorities have yet to comment on whether his journalism played a role in the murder.
Police have launched an investigation, visited the crime scene, and seized evidence as part of their initial probe. A manhunt is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. Law enforcement has assured the public that those responsible will be brought to justice, though no arrests have been reported as of yet.
The incident has drawn condemnation from local journalist associations and press freedom advocates, who have demanded a thorough investigation and stronger protections for journalists operating in high-risk areas. Many have also expressed concern over a growing pattern of violence against reporters in India, especially those working in rural or conflict-prone zones without institutional support or security.
Naresh’s killing is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in India and underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect press freedom and ensure accountability for those who attack the truth.
