Israeli police arrested Palestinian journalist Latifeh Abdellatif in Jerusalem’s Old City. Abdellatif, a freelance photojournalist whose work has been featured in Reuters, ABC News, BBC, Al Jazeera, and TRT, was detained on suspicion of “incitement” and “supporting terrorism” due to her social media posts. Authorities allege that she shared content praising Hamas and its former leader, Yahya Sinwar, including a video where Sinwar expresses a desire to die as a martyr.
Following her arrest, Abdellatif appeared in court via video link. While a judge initially ordered her release, Israeli police appealed the decision, leading to an extension of her detention. She was later released under restrictive conditions, including a bail payment and a ban from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque for one week, with the possibility of an extension for up to six months.
Abdellatif’s arrest has raised concerns among press freedom advocates. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that since the onset of the Gaza war, an unprecedented number of journalists have been detained, with 75 arrests recorded across the occupied Palestinian territories, including 70 by Israeli authorities.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned Abdellatif’s arrest, highlighting that it is part of a broader pattern of targeting journalists in Jerusalem. Since the beginning of March 2025, at least eight journalists have been detained or expelled from the Old City and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Abdellatif’s case underscores the challenges faced by journalists operating in politically sensitive environments, where the line between journalistic expression and alleged incitement can be contentious. Her arrest has drawn attention to the broader issue of press freedom and the treatment of journalists in conflict zones.
