A Dhaka court has denied bail to Zakir Hossain, the main accused in a shocking attack on journalists at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) premises in Segunbagicha on May 21, 2025. The court, however, granted bail to his wife, Beauty Khatun, who is also implicated in the case. The couple was arrested on May 24 and brought before the court the following day, following a swift police investigation that identified them as central figures in the violence.
The attack, which unfolded in broad daylight, involved around 50 individuals armed with firearms, knives, and sticks. The assailants stormed the DRU compound, injuring several journalists, including DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, Office Secretary Rafique Rafi, and reporters Moshior Rahman, Mahbub Hasan, Delwar Mohin, and Mofizul Sadiq. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers acted in a coordinated manner and appeared to be targeting specific individuals. The violent nature of the assault has left the journalistic community in shock and has sparked widespread condemnation.
Law enforcement, including units from the army, quickly intervened to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. A formal complaint was later filed at Shahbagh Police Station, naming ten individuals and listing fifty others as unidentified participants in the attack. The charges include assault, unlawful assembly, and the use of deadly weapons.
While the motive behind the attack is still under investigation, early indications suggest it may have been related to reporting activities or internal disputes. The incident has ignited a national conversation about the safety of journalists and the need for stronger protections for the press.
The DRU and other journalist associations have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation, calling for all perpetrators to be brought to justice. Rights organizations have also voiced concern over increasing threats to press freedom in Bangladesh, urging authorities to ensure journalists can work without fear of violence or reprisal.
As the investigation continues, the case remains a stark reminder of the risks journalists face and the importance of safeguarding free and independent media.
