Dharmendra Singh Chauhan, a seasoned journalist based in Haryana, was shot dead outside his home in Luhari village, Jhajjar district, on the night of May 18, 2025. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from journalist unions and press freedom advocates, who are demanding swift justice and increased protections for reporters.
According to reports, Chauhan, associated with the regional outlet Fast News India, was taking a routine walk near his home after dinner when unidentified assailants attacked him. Witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots before finding Chauhan critically injured on the ground. He had been shot in the head and was rushed to a hospital in Pataudi before being transferred to a facility in Gurugram. Despite doctors’ efforts, he died from his injuries shortly after arrival.
Local police and forensic teams responded quickly, cordoning off the crime scene and launching an investigation. At the time of reporting, the identities and motives of the attackers remain unknown. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not confirmed whether Chauhan had received threats before the attack. However, his death has reignited conversations about the increasingly hostile environment for journalists in India, particularly those working in regional or independent outlets.
Media associations across the country have expressed deep concern over Chauhan’s killing, describing it as another alarming blow to press freedom. The Indian Journalists Union and the Press Club of India called for an impartial investigation and emphasized the urgency of protecting journalists, especially those reporting on sensitive local issues. They also criticized the rising trend of attacks on journalists, citing it as a threat not only to individual safety but also to the public’s right to information.
Chauhan’s family and colleagues remember him as a committed journalist who dedicated years to covering rural and civic issues. His murder marks yet another unresolved case in the growing list of violence against the press in India. Advocacy groups continue to call for justice and systemic reforms to safeguard media professionals nationwide.
