Gaza War: Deadliest Conflict for Journalists in History

In March 2025, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and a coalition of 36 human rights organizations urged the U.S. Congress to take immediate action to protect journalists affiliated with the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). This call to action follows a presidential executive order dismantling USAGM, which oversees outlets like Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Asia (RFA), and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
The coalition’s letter highlights the grave risks faced by USAGM-affiliated journalists, including threats of deportation to countries where they could face imprisonment or worse due to their reporting on politically sensitive issues. The letter also emphasizes the moral and democratic obligation of the United States to safeguard these journalists and uphold press freedom.
In response to the executive order, a U.S. judge granted a temporary restraining order to halt the dismantling of USAGM, acknowledging the potential harm to press freedom and the safety of journalists. Despite this legal intervention, the situation remains precarious, with many journalists still facing uncertainty regarding their legal status and safety.
The coalition’s letter urges Congress to:
-
Ensure the immediate release of 11 USAGM journalists currently imprisoned abroad.
-
Prevent the deportation of USAGM-affiliated journalists to countries where they face persecution.
-
Reinstate and protect funding for USAGM and its affiliated outlets.
-
Reaffirm the United States’ commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists.
The coalition’s letter underscores the critical role of USAGM in providing independent and uncensored news to audiences in repressive environments. The dismantling of USAGM and the potential deportation of its journalists not only jeopardize their safety but also diminish the United States’ influence in promoting democratic values and press freedom globally.
As the situation develops, it is imperative for Congress to act swiftly and decisively to protect the rights and safety of USAGM-affiliated journalists and to uphold the principles of press freedom that are foundational to democratic societies.
