Edmondo Bahati Monja, an investigative journalist for Radio Maria in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was tragically shot and killed by armed assailants. Based in the eastern region of the country, Goma has been a focal point of violence involving rebel and militia groups. Bahati had been reporting on these conflicts, highlighting the grave human rights abuses and escalating violence in the area.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned Bahati’s killing, emphasizing that such acts undermine the fundamental human right to freedom of expression. Azoulay called on the DRC authorities to thoroughly investigate the murder and ensure accountability for those responsible. She reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to supporting media professionals and combating impunity for crimes against journalists.
This incident underscores the perilous conditions faced by journalists in conflict zones. According to UNESCO, the DRC is among the countries where journalists are most at risk, with several cases of violence against media workers reported in recent years. The killing of Bahati adds to the alarming trend of targeted attacks on journalists in the region.
In response to these challenges, UNESCO has been actively working to enhance the safety of journalists in the DRC. Through initiatives aimed at strengthening legal frameworks, providing training for media professionals, and promoting press freedom, UNESCO seeks to create an environment where journalists can operate without fear of violence or retribution. However, the persistent threats highlight the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect media workers and uphold the principles of free expression.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for justice in Bahati’s case and broader reforms to safeguard journalists in the DRC and similar conflict-affected regions.
