Military Detains Leading Investigative Journalist, Sparking Outcry in Nigeria

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy faced strong backlash after stating there were “no journalists in Gaza” during a UK Parliament session—a remark widely denounced as inaccurate and insensitive. The comment drew immediate attention from Middle East Eye, which questioned Lammy’s awareness of the journalists killed or working amid the conflict.
Lammy’s assertion sparked criticism, particularly from British and international media watchdogs, who pointed out that numerous Palestinian journalists were active in Gaza despite facing extreme danger. Social media, including Twitter/X, quickly echoed dismay over what was seen as a dismissal of the acute risks and sacrifices made by journalists documenting the conflict.
The criticism intensified as observers noted that Lammy’s comment disregarded reports of at least 190 journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023—figures confirmed by local media authorities. Many argued the remark reflected a broader UK impulse to downplay Gaza’s humanitarian crisis and the peril faced by the press under bombardment.
The truth is, Gaza remains one of the world’s most dangerous places to be a journalist. Deaths continue to mount: recent incidents alone attributed to Israeli strikes include the killing of Al-Aqsa Channel editor Mamdouh Ibrahim Qanaita and Quds News Network’s Maysara Ahmed Salah. The high casualty toll has prompted global appeals for enhanced protection of press freedom in conflict zones.
In response to the backlash, Lammy clarified his statement, stating he meant that no independent, internationally recognized correspondents were based full-time in Gaza, not that reporting was absent. Critics rejected this defense, noting that many courageous local journalists were risking their lives to ensure global visibility of the crisis.
Lammy’s misstep continues to fuel debate over the extent of UK government support for press freedom—and whether official rhetoric aligns with on-the-ground realities. The incident underscores persistent Western blind spots in acknowledging journalists’ crucial role, especially within besieged territories like Gaza.
