Ukrainian journalist and activist Peter Zalmayev is traversing Africa to amplify awareness of the war in Ukraine among nations often sidelined in global discourse. Having been a Kyiv-based TV host reporting on the conflict since its outbreak, Zalmayev left his post for an ambitious journey—one that merges travel with diplomacy. He began in South Africa and, as of early September 2025, had visited 29 countries with plans to continue through 40 countries in total over a 400-day odyssey, described by him as “mega-exhausting but rewarding.” Uganda marked the 14th country in this African tour, having recently arrived by bus from Rwanda, with Ethiopia next on his itinerary. He later heads to Kenya, the Seychelles, and Madagascar.
Zalmayev characterizes himself as a “self-appointed ambassador of public diplomacy for Ukraine.” He speaks about the war and listens—engaging local media and communities via television, radio, and print to understand how the conflict resonates economically and socially. Notably, he highlights how the war has triggered spikes in fuel and food prices, particularly affecting grain-importing African nations, and has diverted international humanitarian aid from Africa to Ukraine, intensifying local hardship. He notes that Africans are weary of the conflict and generally yearn for peace.
Through this ongoing initiative, Zalmayev deploys his experience—reporting for outlets like CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, and France 24—to foster a two-way conversation: sharing Ukraine’s plight while elevating African perspectives on the ripple effects of a distant war. He hopes that by intertwining journalism with direct engagement and listening, he can help bridge global empathy and understanding.
