Following the deaths of Al Jazeera journalists in a strike near Gaza City’s Al‑Shifa Hospital, British media workers mounted a powerful show of solidarity. Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) across the UK and Ireland organized vigils and protests, including a poignant gathering outside 10 Downing Street in London.
The NUJ—and particularly its London Digital Media branch- released a forceful statement condemning the targeted deaths of media professionals. Among the victims were Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al‑Sharif and photographers Ibrahim Al Thaher, Mohammed Qreiqeh, and Mohammed Nofal—journalists recognized for their courageous frontline reporting. The union decried the “blatant targeting” of these individuals and called for a full, independent investigation, as well as accountability both nationally and internationally.
NUJ General Secretary Laura Davison emphasized the scale of the crisis: this war has become the deadliest in living memory for journalists, with over 226 media workers—including 212 Palestinians—killed in the last 22 months, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The NUJ urged governments, particularly the UK, to take concrete action by pushing for respect for press freedom and supporting proceedings at the International Criminal Court.
The vigils and statements reflect a crescendo of global response to the deaths of media workers in Gaza, as well as broader demands for accountability and an end to impunity in wartime targeting of journalists. These expressions of solidarity reinforce the media’s role as a moral witness: even in the face of lethal risks, journalists’ voices must not be silenced.
