Ugandan journalist and human rights activist Agather Atuhaire endured a traumatic experience during her detention by Tanzanian authorities in Dar es Salaam. She had traveled to Tanzania alongside Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi to attend the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Atuhaire recounted that upon their arrival, both were apprehended by security personnel, blindfolded, and taken to an undisclosed location. During her detention, Atuhaire was stripped down to her underwear, beaten, and subjected to invasive procedures involving unidentified substances being inserted into her body. She described being forced to lie flat while these procedures were carried out, leaving her physically incapacitated and emotionally traumatized.
After several days in custody, Atuhaire was released and left at the Mutukula border crossing with Uganda. She reported that the physical abuse had left her unable to walk for three days due to severe swelling in her feet. Additionally, she was administered painkillers multiple times a day, far exceeding the prescribed dosage, which raised concerns about potential overdose.
The Tanzanian government has not publicly responded to these allegations. However, the incident has drawn international condemnation. The United States government expressed deep concern over the reported mistreatment and called for a thorough investigation into the human rights abuses. Human rights organizations have also demanded accountability and urged Tanzanian authorities to uphold the rights and safety of activists and journalists.
This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by journalists and human rights defenders in the region, particularly those engaging in cross-border advocacy. It underscores the urgent need for protective measures to ensure the safety and freedom of expression for media professionals and activists operating in politically sensitive environments.
