U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has publicly appealed for the release of Ulviyya Guliyeva (also known as Ulviyya Ali), a journalist detained in Azerbaijan in connection with the so-called “Meydan TV case.”
In her letter, Shaheen pledged to elevate Ali’s case on the international stage and to work diligently toward securing her freedom:
“I will raise my voice on your case wherever possible and work to secure your release.”
Shaheen framed her advocacy as part of a broader commitment to supporting political prisoners in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that Ali’s case is emblematic of larger threats to press freedom.
Ali was arrested in the early hours of May 7, following a raid on her home by the Baku Main Police Department. She was then placed under pretrial detention by the Khatai District Court. The charges against her have since expanded, mirroring the broader crackdown on staff connected to Meydan TV—a media outlet often critical of the government.
In referencing her plea in interviews and other public commentary, Shaheen noted Ali’s commitment to journalistic integrity—particularly her insistence on reporting the truth despite the risks. She also pointed to the journalist’s mother’s remarks in The Washington Post, which helped bring increased international visibility to Ali’s situation.
Looking forward, Shaheen expressed hope for a future in which she could welcome Ali to testify before the U.S. Senate upon her release, and urged her to remain strong while reminding her that “your courage does not go unnoticed.”
