Somali Broadcast Journalist Shot Dead in Kismayo as Police Officer Arrested
March 4, 2026March 04, 2026 – Turkey –
Two Turkish journalists were detained by Israeli authorities while conducting a live broadcast outside a major military facility in Tel Aviv, prompting diplomatic protests from Turkey and renewed debate over press freedom during wartime reporting.
The journalists, Emrah Çakmak, a reporter for CNN Türk, and cameraman Halil Kahraman, were taken into custody on 3 March 2026 while reporting near the Kirya military headquarters, the central base of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Israeli police said the pair were suspected of filming a sensitive security installation while broadcasting live for a foreign media outlet.
According to Israeli authorities, police were alerted after reports that two individuals equipped with cameras were filming and transmitting live images near the military complex. Officers arrived at the scene, halted the broadcast, and detained the journalists for questioning on suspicion of recording a strategic site in real time.
The incident occurred amid heightened security tensions in Israel following missile attacks from Iran, with the journalists reportedly covering developments related to the ongoing escalation. During the live broadcast, individuals believed to be soldiers approached the journalists and seized the reporter’s phone before police intervened, according to initial reports circulating online.
The detentions quickly drew a reaction from Turkish officials. Turkey’s government condemned the arrests and demanded the journalists’ immediate release, describing the incident as an infringement on press freedom and the public’s right to access information. Turkish authorities said they were pursuing diplomatic efforts to secure the journalists’ release and were closely monitoring the situation through official channels.
Turkish officials also stressed that the journalists were carrying out their professional duties as reporters covering a major international story and argued that detaining journalists engaged in live reporting undermines media freedoms.
Israeli police, however, maintained that the detentions were related solely to security concerns. Since the start of the Gaza war and regional escalation, authorities have imposed stricter restrictions on filming military personnel, strategic sites, and other sensitive locations, citing operational security risks.
The case has highlighted the growing tension between security measures and journalistic access during periods of conflict. Media organisations and press freedom advocates note that reporters covering military developments often face heightened scrutiny and restrictions, particularly when reporting near sensitive facilities.
The outcome of the investigation into the journalists’ activities was not immediately clear, though Turkish officials indicated they were working to ensure the reporters’ safe return.
