Two media workers—Hossain Ziad, Bureau Chief and Special Correspondent for Ekhon Television, and cameraman Md Parvez—were assaulted while reporting in Sitakunda upazila, Chittagong district.
The incident unfolded in the Jangal Salimpur area (Loharpul locality) on Sunday morning. According to Parvez, as they entered to gather news, roughly 50–60 individuals attacked them without warning. They were physically beaten, their video camera destroyed, and their mobile phones, wallet, and IDs seized.
The assault left both journalists seriously injured. Ziad, who holds a senior role at Ekhon TV, was among those harmed. Their equipment was vandalized, compounding the attack’s impact.
Local journalist bodies, including the Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists, swiftly condemned the violence and called for the perpetrators’ arrest. The press community demanded prompt legal action and enhanced protections for journalists working under hostile conditions.
The assault occurred amid a broader context of violence in the area. A clash between criminal gangs in Jungle Salimpur had earlier escalated, resulting in one fatality and injuring 16 others. Journalists were already covering the aftermath of that conflict when they were targeted.
In response, Sitakunda police arrested three individuals suspected in connection with the gang skirmish. Authorities also recovered arms and ammunition at a local hospital where the suspects were receiving treatment.
This episode is part of a troubling pattern of aggression toward journalists in Bangladesh, especially those covering crime, protests, or politically sensitive topics. Media rights groups continue urging authorities to safeguard press freedom and hold attackers accountable.
