Azerbaijan Intensifies Crackdown on Independent Media Amidst Unprecedented Arrests
February 5, 2025February 05, 2025 – Turkey –
Turkey experienced a sharp increase in press freedom violations, sparking urgent calls for action from more than 40 international media and press freedom organizations. Groups including the International Press Institute (IPI), the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), and Freedom House jointly condemned the intensifying crackdown on independent journalism across the country.
The coalition highlighted alarming statistics: in January 2025 alone, at least nine journalists were arrested, six received prison sentences, five were detained, 23 faced investigations, and one was subjected to police obstruction. These measures, many of which appear arbitrary and politically motivated, severely undermine the ability of journalists to report freely and critically on matters of public interest. The crackdown threatens the very existence of independent media outlets in Turkey and erodes democratic discourse and fundamental human rights.
The joint statement called on Turkish authorities to uphold their constitutional obligations and adhere to international standards protecting freedom of expression and press freedom. The groups demanded the immediate release of journalists detained without just cause and urged the government to cease judicial harassment of media professionals. They emphasized that a free and independent press is essential for democracy, transparency, and holding power to account.
This surge in repression is part of a broader pattern of shrinking civic space in Turkey, where dissenting voices, especially those exposing corruption or human rights abuses, face escalating risks. Media freedom advocates warn that continued persecution of journalists threatens not only individual rights but the country’s democratic future.
The international community and press freedom organizations remain vigilant, monitoring Turkey’s treatment of journalists and advocating for reforms to protect press freedom. The collective appeal underscores the urgent need for Turkey to respect journalistic independence and safeguard the rights of media workers, ensuring that journalism can continue to serve its vital role in society without fear of reprisal.
Without meaningful change, the crackdown in Turkey may deepen, further silencing critical voices and weakening democratic institutions.
