Turkish freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker Hakan Tosun has died from severe injuries sustained in a violent assault in Istanbul, intensifying fears over the safety of journalists in Turkey. He had been reported missing since October 10, before being found unconscious in the city’s Esenyurt district and taken to the hospital, where he passed away on October 13.
Tosun, 50, was known for his reporting on environmental destruction, social inequality, and corruption, often challenging powerful interests. His disappearance and the subsequent discovery of his critically injured body triggered widespread concern among colleagues and press freedom organizations. His family and friends spent days searching for him before he was identified at a hospital more than 27 hours after being admitted.
Authorities arrested two suspects in connection with the assault, though the motive remains unclear. Press freedom advocates, opposition lawmakers, and human rights groups are demanding a thorough and transparent investigation to determine whether the attack was linked to his journalism.
The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the killing, urging the government to investigate possible connections between his reporting and the attack. They emphasized that the continued targeting of journalists fosters an environment of fear and erodes press freedom.
Tosun’s death comes amid growing concerns over the treatment of journalists in Turkey, where reporters covering sensitive topics have faced harassment, detention, and physical assaults. His case has sparked outrage at home and abroad, with international press groups calling for justice and protection for media workers.
Hakan Tosun’s work gave a voice to communities facing environmental exploitation and social injustice. His death is not only a devastating loss for his family and colleagues but also a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by those who expose uncomfortable truths.
