Journalists in Tripura gathered at the Agartala Press Club to mark the eighth death anniversary of Santanu Bhowmik, a photojournalist who was killed in the line of duty. Members of the Tripura Journalists’ Union offered floral tributes to his portrait, recalling his contributions to journalism and the tragic circumstances of his death.
Bhowmik, who worked for the local cable television channel Dinraat, was stabbed to death on 20 September 2017 while covering a political protest and roadside blockade in Mandai, near Agartala. The protest involved supporters of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) clashing with those of the tribal wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Colleagues report that he was attacked by a group with sharp weapons after being accused of reporting unfavorably on the IPFT.
At the 2025 ceremony, Tripura Journalists’ Union President Sajjad Ali, Executive President Pranab Sarkar, Vice-Presidents Sourajit Pal and Samaresh De, among others, were present. Pranab Sarkar voiced concern over the protracted delay in delivering justice. He urged exemplary punishment for those responsible and called upon the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite the probe without further delay.
The 2017 killing of Bhowmik had already drawn widespread condemnation. Media organisations, journalist unions, and press freedom advocates had demanded accountability and the institution of stronger mechanisms to protect journalists operating in volatile settings. Despite arrests made in connection with his murder, his family and colleagues continue to express frustration at what they view as slow progress in investigations and the unresolved nature of many of the legal proceedings.
The tribute underscores not only Bhowmik’s lasting legacy among his peers but also enduring concerns over press freedom, journalist safety, and the need for justice in cases where media professionals die while carrying out their work.
