States Must Dramatically Step Up Protections for Journalists in Exile

At the concluding session of the Gaza Tribunal held in Istanbul, Palestinian journalists, medical professionals, and witnesses gave powerful recorded testimony alleging deliberate attacks by Israeli forces on media workers, medical personnel, and non-combatants in the Gaza Strip. Among the journalists whose testimonies were presented were Mohammad Qraiqea and Hossam Shabat, both of whom were killed shortly after their recordings. Qraiqea said that “all the journalists, without exception, are under the threat of the Israeli attack.” He described burying his own mother following her death by shelling near Al-Shifa Hospital.
Shabat testified that wearing press markings made him a “direct target,” adding, “we are slaughtered … we are killed and no one hears us.” Medics and health-workers also recounted assaults on hospitals, attacks on unborn children, and the destruction of cemeteries — all framed as part of a pattern of systemic targeting. The tribunal heard from experts that more than 250 separate incidents involving journalists in Gaza have been documented over 700 days of the conflict.
Organizing bodies described the tribunal as a people’s effort to record evidence of alleged genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza, emphasizing “complicity, international systems, resistance and solidarity.” By spotlighting the deaths of media and healthcare professionals, the tribunal reframed them not as collateral casualties but as witnesses and victims whose work to document and preserve life was itself under siege.
The presentations emphasized the dual role of the press and medical staff — both as protectors of life (through healthcare) and truth (through journalism). Their targeting, according to testimonies, is intended to silence documentation and obscure accountability. The tribunal organizers urged international institutions to act on the amassed evidence.
