Ghanaian Journalists Assaulted During Election Coverage Spark National and International Outcry
July 24, 2025July 24, 2025 – Palestine –
Agence France‑Presse, Associated Press, Reuters, and BBC News issued a rare joint statement expressing “desperate concern” for journalists operating in Gaza, many of whom are now facing the threat of starvation. These independent reporters—often Palestinian freelancers and stringers—have become the primary source of international coverage from inside the enclave, and they are now enduring the same dire conditions as the civilians they document. The statement warned that many journalists cannot adequately feed themselves or their families, making it increasingly impossible to continue reporting.
The news groups emphasized that journalists in Gaza are enduring “deprivations and hardships” inherent in war zones—but the added specter of hunger marks a grim escalation. They called on Israeli authorities to allow journalists to travel in and out of Gaza freely and ensure food reaches both press workers and the broader population.
With the territory sealed off from foreign correspondents since the war began in October 2023, international media have depended heavily on local reporters, who operate under extreme scarcity. Reports from other agencies and students of humanitarian conditions cite widespread starvation affecting Gaza’s 2 million-plus residents, with more than 100 aid organizations warning that mass starvation is taking hold.
The often-unpublished risks these journalists face include dehydration, illness, complete exhaustion, and imminent physical collapse. AFP specifically called for the evacuation of its local freelancers and their families from Gaza if conditions do not improve.
Israel has largely denied deliberating starvation, stating it allows humanitarian aid through official crossings and blaming Hamas or international agencies for distribution failures. Since May 2025, over 4,500 aid trucks have entered the territory—but aid is still reported as being far below needed levels. Hundreds of starvation-related deaths have been reported in July alone, including children and journalists.
While Israel has recently announced steps such as humanitarian corridors, controlled airdrops, and pauses in military operations to facilitate aid deliveries, the media groups stress these measures are inadequate. Their statement implores Israeli authorities to act swiftly—not only to feed their journalists but also to allow foreign press access to Gaza to ensure transparent coverage during one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent decades.
