Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, widely known as Tommy Robinson, has been charged with two counts of harassment causing fear of violence against two male journalists. The alleged incidents occurred between August 5 and 7, 2024, during a period of nationwide unrest following the murder of three young girls in Southport, northwest England. Robinson is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 5, 2025.
These charges come shortly after a High Court decision to reduce Robinson’s 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court by four months, making him eligible for early release on May 26, 2025. The original sentence was imposed in October 2024 after Robinson breached a 2021 injunction prohibiting him from repeating false allegations against Syrian refugee Jamal Hijazi, who had previously won a libel case against him. The court acknowledged Robinson’s compliance in removing the defamatory content but noted his lack of remorse.
In addition to the harassment charges, Robinson faces a separate trial in October 2025 for allegedly failing to provide the PIN code to his mobile phone when stopped by Kent Police in July 2024.
Robinson, a prominent figure in Britain’s far-right movement and founder of the English Defence League, has a history of legal issues, including assault and mortgage fraud. Despite the decline of the EDL since 2013, he remains a controversial figure, often accused of inciting unrest during periods of social tension. Notably, during the August 2024 riots, he was accused by the media and politicians of inflaming tensions at anti-immigration protests.
The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that the criminal proceedings are ongoing and highlighted Robinson’s right to a fair trial.
