On World Press Freedom Day 2025, public service media organizations worldwide united to reaffirm their commitment to independent journalism and press freedom. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Public Media Alliance (PMA) highlighted the escalating challenges faced by journalists and media institutions globally, emphasizing the critical role of public service media (PSM) in upholding democratic values.
The EBU, in its statement, underscored the vital role of public service broadcasters in delivering quality news that matters to audiences. Amidst the growing pressures from misinformation and polarized politics, public service media are at the forefront of maintaining trust and providing reliable information. The EBU also cited a collaborative effort earlier in the year, where four public broadcasters worked together to organize the cross-border broadcast of an exclusive interview with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, showcasing the strength of international cooperation in journalism .
Similarly, the PMA’s briefing on World Press Freedom Day 2025 highlighted the persistent threats to press freedom, including violence against journalists, state capture, and the rise of artificial intelligence’s impact on journalism. The PMA emphasized the importance of defending independent media as essential to protecting democracy and maintaining public trust. The organization also pointed out that while public media are crucial in holding power accountable, they often face political pressures and financial constraints that can undermine their independence .
These observances serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by journalists and media organizations worldwide. The united stance of public service media on World Press Freedom Day underscores the collective responsibility to protect press freedom and ensure that journalism remains a pillar of democracy. As threats to press freedom continue to evolve, the commitment of public service media to uphold the principles of independent and accountable journalism remains more crucial than ever.
