The human rights organization Artículo 19, in collaboration with Grey México and Oriental Films, released a poignant short film titled The Shooting to commemorate the International Day for the Right to the Truth. This four-minute film serves as a powerful metaphor for the perilous conditions journalists face in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries for media professionals.
Directed by Yupi Segura and Charlie Gutiérrez, The Shooting depicts a symbolic confrontation: on one side, members of organized crime wield firearms to instill fear and suppress truth; on the other, journalists “shoot” with their cameras, representing their pursuit of truth amidst threats. This stark imagery underscores the asymmetry of power and the brutal reality journalists endure in their quest to inform the public.
Since 2000, over 200 journalists in Mexico have been murdered or have disappeared, with an alarming 98% of these cases remaining unresolved. Such impunity fosters a climate of fear and self-censorship, undermining the public’s right to information. Leopoldo Maldonado, regional director of Artículo 19 for Mexico and Central America, emphasized the urgency of addressing this crisis, stating, “We cannot normalize this because it restricts our right to know.’
Complementing the film, Artículo 19 launched a print campaign featuring evocative imagery to further highlight the dangers journalists face. These visuals aim to raise public awareness and pressure authorities to take concrete actions to protect media workers and uphold freedom of expression.
The Shooting is more than a film; it is a clarion call to recognize and confront the systemic violence against journalists in Mexico. By bringing these issues to the forefront, Artículo 19 seeks to galvanize support for press freedom and ensure that journalists can operate without fear of retribution.
