On September 2, 2025, Gaza’s journalism community suffered another devastating loss with the killing of Eman al-Zamli. She was shot in the head by an explosive bullet while fetching water. The Palestinian journalist was caught in Israel’s latest wave of airstrikes. Al-Zamli was among more than one hundred Palestinians killed in a single day of bombardment that struck homes, streets, and aid gathering points across Gaza City and surrounding areas.
Her death came on a day already marked by heavy bloodshed, where dozens of civilians, including children, were also killed. For press freedom defenders, the news underscored the perilous reality that Gaza’s journalists face daily as they attempt to document a war that has already taken the lives of nearly 250 media workers since October 2023. Each of these deaths represents a silenced voice and a broken link in the chain of truth-telling from one of the world’s most dangerous war zones.
Al-Zamli’s killing highlights the indiscriminate nature of the strikes, which have repeatedly hit not only military targets but also densely populated civilian areas. Her loss further deepens the chilling atmosphere for journalists who continue to report under near-constant fire, knowing that the simple act of holding a camera, microphone, or notebook may cost them their lives. Advocacy groups stress that this relentless targeting of journalists erodes the ability of the world to receive uncensored accounts from Gaza, effectively placing a blackout over the suffering of its people.
International outcry has been swift, with watchdog organizations once again calling for accountability and protection for media workers. They note that the unprecedented number of journalist deaths in Gaza represents not just collateral damage but a direct assault on press freedom itself. For Gaza’s press corps, the death of Eman al-Zamli is both a personal tragedy and a stark reminder that their profession continues to be among the most dangerous anywhere in the world.
As Gaza mourns yet another journalist, the international community is confronted with the urgency of protecting those who risk everything to bear witness. Al-Zamli’s memory now joins the long list of names that symbolize both sacrifice and the unrelenting need for justice.
