The Syrian Ministry of Information held a solemn ceremony on December 6, 2025, at the National Center for Visual Arts in Damascus to honor journalists who were killed during last year’s 2024 “Deterrence of Aggression” battle.
The event was attended by Information Minister Hamza al‑Mustafa and Communications Minister Abdulsalam Haykal, who paid tribute to the fallen reporters — describing them as individuals who “carried cameras and pens like burning embers,” and whose work helped preserve a crucial record of the conflict.
Minister al-Mustafa characterized the 2024 battle as a defining moment — an “epic” that disrupted long-standing political assumptions. He argued that journalists’ commitment to documenting the war provided a counter-narrative of hope and resilience, one that will remain part of Syria’s collective memory and future reconstruction efforts.
For many Syrians, the ceremony represents both remembrance and a stark reminder of the heavy price paid by the media — and the dangers journalists continue to face in conflict zones. Since the war began, dozens of local and foreign reporters, citizen journalists, and media staff have lost their lives attempting to cover ground realities.
The Ministry’s public commemoration also reflects the ongoing challenge of rebuilding journalism in a country scarred by years of conflict and where frontline reporting often comes at the steepest cost. Observers note that for every journalist honored, many more remain missing, imprisoned, or exiled — a dark legacy that underlines the urgent need to protect media workers going forward.
As Syria enters a new phase of reconstruction, the ceremony stands as both tribute and warning: the press must not only remember the fallen, but work to ensure that their sacrifices pave the way toward safer, freer, and more accountable journalism.
