The State Attorney General’s Office in Michoacán has confirmed the arrest of the alleged murderer responsible for the killing of journalist Armando Linares López, who was shot dead outside his home in Zitácuaro in March 2022. The suspect, known only as Magdiel “N,” was detained during an operational action in the same municipality where the crime took place. Authorities stated that Magdiel “N” will soon face a judicial proceeding to determine his legal situation.
Linares had been the director of the digital news outlet Monitor Michoacán. His murder came only six weeks after the killing of his colleague Roberto Toledo, underscoring growing threats against journalists in the region. Before his death, Linares had repeatedly reported death threats and asked authorities for protection, none of which materialized in meaningful security measures. The team’s reporting had exposed corruption at both municipal and state levels, and they attributed the threats to that work.
A prior report from August 2023 noted that a different suspect, Carlos Gerardo alias “02,” was also identified in the investigation and that authorities had offered a reward of approximately 100 000 pesos for information on both him and Magdiel “N”. However the latest development confirms that only Magdiel “N” has been detained, suggesting he may have been considered the material perpetrator of the crime.
Journalists and rights advocates continue to stress that while this arrest marks a step forward, it does not address the broader issue of impunity. Many believe that the intellectual authors behind the crime remain at large and that meaningful justice will require a full accounting of all those involved.
