Sudanese freelance journalist Muammar Ibrahim, a regular contributor to Al Jazeera Mubasher, has been detained by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, North Darfur, amid the group’s takeover of the city.
Ibrahim was among the few reporters still inside El Fasher during the RSF-sustained siege, capturing the worsening humanitarian conditions under heavy bombardment, communications blackouts, and lack of access to essentials for more than 200,000 civilians.
Video footage first shared on RSF-linked social media shows Ibrahim surrounded by RSF fighters shortly after the group announced it had captured the 6th Infantry Division base in the city. In the clip, Ibrahim identifies himself as a neutral journalist and confirms he is in custody while attempting to exit El Fasher.
The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate confirmed his detention hours after the RSF claimed full control of El Fasher and placed responsibility for his safety squarely on the paramilitary. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) issued an urgent call for Ibrahim’s unconditional release, condemning the RSF’s actions as a clear assault on press freedom and a sign of the extreme risks faced by media professionals in the region.
Colleagues lauded Ibrahim as “the last voice of Darfur”, noting that he persisted with reporting despite the intensifying danger. Editor-in-Chief Ataf Mohamed of the independent newspaper Al-Sudani highlighted that Ibrahim’s arrest underscores the dire environment for journalists in conflict zones, urging international bodies to intervene.
The detention occurred during the RSF’s capture of El Fasher, the final major stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in Darfur, following an 18-month siege and a sharp escalation in violence. Concern is mounting that Ibrahim’s fate reflects the broader deterioration of protections for civilians and press workers in the conflict-ridden region.
