Outcry Grows Over Journalist Deaths in Gaza Amid Accusations of Targeted Attacks

Sudanese journalist Hassan Fadl al-Mawla Mousa was killed during a violent assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as the paramilitary group captured the town of Wad al-Noura in Sudan’s Gezira state. His death marks yet another blow to press freedom in a country where the ongoing civil conflict has created increasingly dangerous conditions for journalists.
Mousa, who was also an Islamic scholar, lost his life while documenting the unfolding military operation. He was shot and killed during the RSF’s takeover of the town, part of a broader push by the group to extend control across central Sudan. Local residents say the attack involved heavy artillery and indiscriminate violence against civilians, with dozens reportedly killed or injured.
The RSF, which has been engaged in a brutal power struggle with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023, has been accused of numerous human rights violations, including looting, unlawful killings, and the targeting of non-combatants. The seizure of Wad al-Noura is seen as part of a strategic effort to assert dominance over the region, which has become a key battleground in the conflict.
Hassan Fadl al-Mawla Mousa’s death highlights the extreme risks faced by media workers in Sudan. Journalists attempting to cover the war or report on atrocities are frequently targeted, harassed, or silenced. Press freedom advocates warn that without independent reporting, atrocities risk going undocumented and unchecked.
The Committee to Protect Journalists and other media rights groups have condemned the killing and urged all parties in the conflict to respect the rights and safety of journalists. They also call on international actors to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for attacks on media professionals.
While the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with power shifting rapidly between armed groups, the loss of voices like Mousa’s only deepens the country’s information blackout. As the conflict escalates, so too does the threat to journalists striving to keep the world informed about the violence and suffering on the ground.
