In a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones, Sudanese journalist Ahmed Mohamed Saleh Sayyidna was killed by shelling in El Fasher, Darfur, on April 2025. Sayyidna, a reporter for Sudanese media outlet Al-Watan, was caught in the crossfire of ongoing clashes between Sudanese government forces and rebel groups. His death marks yet another loss in a wave of attacks on journalists covering the devastating conflict that has gripped Sudan since the beginning of the year.
Sayyidna’s death is part of a broader trend of violence against journalists in Sudan, where at least five media workers have been killed in less than two months due to the violent actions of paramilitary groups. The targeting of journalists is part of a wider crackdown on press freedom in Sudan, where reporting on the conflict is increasingly dangerous, and media outlets face both government and military pressures.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and other organizations have condemned the killing of Sayyidna, calling for urgent measures to protect journalists in Sudan and bring those responsible to justice. The IFJ stressed the need for greater international support for the safety of media workers, who are often the first to witness the atrocities of war and report them to the world. Media freedom organizations are pushing for accountability and an end to impunity for those who target journalists in conflict zones.
This loss is a stark reminder of the risks that journalists like Ahmed Mohamed Saleh Sayyidna face in their pursuit of truth amid war and violence. His death serves as a tragic symbol of the ongoing dangers for the press in Sudan and a call for greater protection of journalists who risk their lives to inform the world.
